The Problem
Trust beneficiaries have an increased risk of involvement with the criminal justice system both as defendants and as victims. Hundreds of beneficiaries each year are incarcerated for their safety while adequate service alternatives do not exist. Thousands more are arrested for offenses resulting from behaviors associated with symptoms of their mental disorders.
The Goal
The Disability Justice Focus Area aims to reduce the involvement and recidivism of Trust beneficiaries in the criminal justice system and increase the criminal justice system's ability to effectively accommodate the needs of victims and offenders who are Trust beneficiaries.
